Liberty County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population was 61,610. The 2007 Census Estimate shows a population of 60,503.[1] The county seat is Hinesville.[2]

It is a part of the Hinesville-Fort Stewart metropolitan statistical area

Geography

According to the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 602.52 square miles (1,560.5 km2), of which 519.05 square miles (1,344.3 km2) (or 86.15%) is land and 83.47 square miles (216.2 km2) (or 13.85%) is water.[3]

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 61,610 people, 19,383 households, and 15,138 families residing in the county. The population density was 119 people per square mile (46/km²). There were 21,977 housing units at an average density of 42 per square mile (16/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 46.64% White, 42.84% Black or African American, 0.52% Native American, 1.76% Asian, 0.43% Pacific Islander, 4.43% from other races, and 3.37% from two or more races. 8.15% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

According to 2005 Census Estimates Liberty County had a population that was 44.5% African-American, 44.4% Non-Hispanic white, 7.2% Latino, 3.1% non-Hispanics who reported multiple races, 1.9% Asian and 0.5% of both Native Americans and Pacific Islanders.

There were 19,383 households out of which 50.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.60% were married couples living together, 14.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.90% were non-families. 16.60% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.93 and the average family size was 3.29.

In the county the population was spread out with 32.00% under the age of 18, 17.90% from 18 to 24, 33.90% from 25 to 44, 12.20% from 45 to 64, and 3.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 25 years. For every 100 females there were 111.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 115.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $33,477, and the median income for a family was $35,031. Males had a median income of $25,305 versus $20,765 for females. The per capita income for the county was $13,855. About 13.50% of families and 15.00% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.20% of those under age 18 and 19.90% of those age 65 or over. Actor Ben Affleck is a resident of Liberty County, GA.
