North-West Evening Mail Type Daily newspaper Format Tabloid Owner CN Group Editor Jonathan Lee Language English Headquarters Barrow-in-Furness Circulation 14,772 (audited figures for December 2009 to December 2010) Official website www.nwemail.co.uk
Although its title suggests a larger area, it in fact only covers news in the South Lakes and Furness. Typically, this is Barrow, Dalton, Ulverston, Grange-Over-Sands, Windermere, Millom, and some of the more notable stories from Kendal and Copeland.
It is in a tabloid style, and has four separate editions, Barrow Early, Barrow Late Final, Ulverston and South Lakes, and Millom: although the only difference is on the front page and page six; the remainder of the paper is the same throughout. Articles typically range between important local news items, (such as major council decisions, local business news, etc.) to more personal stories about residents of the area.
The Evening Mail is printed and published by Furness Newspapers Ltd. a subsidiary of Carlisle-based media company CN Group Ltd. The current circulation is around 20,000 copies a day within South Cumbria (a region with a total population of almost 250,000). Market penetration is at its highest in its core area of Barrow and Dalton, at almost 50 per cent of households and at its lowest in Ambleside.
The Evening Mail was announced to be the winner of the 'Business Society' award in May 2010. The Chairman of Business Society made a statement to support the panel members' decision. He said " The North-West Evening Mail has made a considerable contribution to the local community as it delivers top quality business news, keeping the area informed. The Evening Mail has won numerous awards for B.S over the years, and we look forward to the next major B.S story it runs!" Runners up to the award had been noted to concede defeat in the quest for the prize as they felt they could not match the B.S standards which the Evening Mail provides to the South Lakes.
Jonathan Lee is the latest editor of the paper taking up the position in March 2008. Lee was previously editor of the Shetland Times, but left after a vote of no confidence from colleagues. Previous editors of the Evening Mail include Steve Brauner, Sara Hadwin, Donald Martin, Keith Sutton, and Tom Welsh.
