Chebrolu, or Chebrole (Telugu: చేబ్రోలు), is a town and a Mandal in Guntur district in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India, located at 16°11′N 80°31′E / 16.183°N 80.517°E / 16.183; 80.517.[1] It is a major panchayat comprising three villages, Chebrolu, Pathareddypalem and Kothareddypalem and is the mandal headquarters. It was a regional fort for the Pallava, Chalukyas and Kakatiya Empires. Its ancient name was Sambhole (from which 'Chebrolu' is derived). It became famous during the rule of the Kakatiyas, as a great general Jayapa ruled Chebrolu. Jayapa's sisters were married to Ganapatideva, the greatest Kakatiya emperor. Jayapa also wrote a famous treatise on Indian dance, Nrutyaratnavali.

History

Terracotta figurines and two coins related to Constantine Empire were found in this place. It was also a place where several inscriptions of Cholas like Velanadu Chodas were found. Satyasraya of Eastern Chalukyas sent an army by his general Baya Nambi to seize of the areas of Chalukya Cholas. The general entered Vengi from the south, reduced the forts of Dharanikota and Yanamadala to ashes and established himself at Chebrolu.

Economy

The Chebrole economy is mostly agricultural based, although there are now institutions of higher education; red chilli, cotton and rice are major crops. In the last decade, spinning and rice mills have been providing employment to the youth of the region.

Chebrole was also famous for its variety of tobacco used for cigars ('Chutta Pugaku') which is cultivated in a different kind of soil.

Demographics

The village population is around 13136 among which males are 6489 and females are 6647.

Culture

Chebrolu has more than 100 temples of great historical importance, including one dedicated to Lord Brahma.
