Biography

Early life

Welsh was born in Tucson, Arizona and attended D'Evelyn High School in Denver, Colorado but later transferred to Ralston Valley High School in Arvada, Colorado. Born in a musical household, Dave began playing the guitar when he was twelve years old, after failing to learn to play the piano and saxophone.[1] In an interview, he stated that the opening track from Radiohead's 2000 album, Kid A, "Everything in Its Right Place" challenged his assumptions about music.[2] Before taking up music as a career, Dave worked in an ice-cream shop with future band-mate Ben Wysocki, and later moved to a shoe store.

Career

Beginnings

Dave began playing guitar in a band named "Ember", with future The Fray drummer Ben Wysocki and singer-pianist Isaac Slade. "Ember" soon dissolved, and in the spring of 2002, Slade ran into guitarist Joe King. The duo began regular jam sessions, which led to writing new songs. Wysocki joined them, and later Welsh was invited to join the band as lead guitarist. The newly formed band was named "The Fray".

The Fray

The Fray achieved mainstream success with their debut album, How to Save a Life in 2005. Dave limited himself to playing only guitar on the album. However, on their second album, The Fray, he played synthesizer and other keyboard parts, most notably on the track "We Build Then We Break". Commenting on the experience, he said "I love to explore musically."[3]

Personal life

Welsh was married on August 3, 2006, to Janelle Czopek.[4] He has one younger sister who is a teacher in Loveland, CO.
