Trebnje is a city in Slovenia.[1] The city lies on the Temenica River in the traditional region of Lower Carniola. The settlement developed on the main regional road and railway line from Ljubljana to Novo Mesto. The settlement had a population of about 3,520 in 2010.[2] The city is the centre of the municipality of the same name, which is included in the Southeast Slovenia statistical region.[3]

The parish church in the city is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Novo Mesto. It is first mentioned in written documents dating to 1163. The building dates to the mid-15th century. It was vaulted in 1645 and extended in the mid-18th century.[4]

Trebnje Castle is a 13th-century castle on the right bank of the Temenica River to the south of the city centre. It was extended in the 17th and 18th century. It owes its current look to a 19th-century remodelling in the historicist style.[5]
