The largest town in the region is Novo Mesto. It is the largest region in Slovenia. It has the highest share of young people (aged 0-14) with 15.8%. The population is on the increase due to a positive net migration rate as well as the natural increase.
The region includes the following municipalities: Črnomelj, Dolenjske Toplice, Kočevje, Kostel, Loški Potok, Metlika, Mirna, Mirna Peč, Mokronog-Trebelno, Novo Mesto, Osilnica, Ribnica, Semič, Sodražica, Straža, Slovenia, Šentjernej, Šentrupert, Škocjan, Šmarješke Toplice, Trebnje, and Žužemberk
It has a total area of 2675 km².
