The dozen Nehan–Bougainville languages are a group of Oceanic languages spoken on the Green Islands (Nissan Island), Buka Island, Bougainville, and surrounding islands in Papua New Guinea.

Languages

The unity of the family was supported at a 95% confidence level by a 2008 analysis of the Austronesian Basic Vocabulary Database[1] Within the family, Nehan and Saposa–Tinputz were supported at a 92% level against Piva–Banoni.

  • Piva–Banoni: Piva (Lawunuia), Banoni
  • Nehan – North Bougainville
    • Nehan (Nissan)
    • Saposa–Tinputz: Hahon, Saposa (Taiof) – Teop, Tinputz
    • Buka: Halia languages, Petats
    • Papapana
    • Solos

The Buka languages, Papapana, and Solos were not included in the 2008 analysis. They have traditionally been classified as independent branches of Nehan – North Bougainville. Of the Saposa–Tinputz languages, Saposa and Teop were found to cluster together against the others.
