Mountain Pine is a city in Garland County, Arkansas, United States. It is part of the 'Hot Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area'. The population was 772 at the 2000 census Mountain Pine's population is believed to have grown back to about 900 in 2008. It is located near Lake Hamilton and Lake Ouachita. The city consists of five defined neighborhoods, Pinewood(Northside), South Mtn. Pine, A Business District(City Hall, Bank, Post Office, etc.), Cozy Acres (Southwest) and Mtn. View/Timberland area.

Geography

Mountain Pine is located at 34°34′21″N 93°10′22″W / 34.5725°N 93.17278°W / 34.5725; -93.17278 (34.572375, -93.172806).[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.5 km²), of which 1.7 square miles (4.5 km²) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (1.14%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 772 people, 308 households, and 221 families residing in the city. The population density was 445.4 people per square mile (172.3/km²). There were 353 housing units at an average density of 203.7/sq mi (78.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 71.37% White, 23.45% Black or African American, 1.94% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.26% from other races, and 2.33% from two or more races. 0.39% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 308 households out of which 33.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.5% were married couples living together, 20.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 26.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the city the population was spread out with 28.9% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $20,804, and the median income for a family was $22,344. Males had a median income of $22,206 versus $16,058 for females. About 39.8% of families are below the poverty level.

Corporal Loren M. Buffalo

Corporal Loren Miles Buffalo, 20, of Mountain Pine, Ark. died March 9 after being struck by an improvised explosive device while on dismounted patrol March 9 near Haji Rahmuddin, Afghanistan.

Buffalo was a Cavalry Scout assigned to Bravo Troop, 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He joined the Army in May 2009 and arrived at Fort Campbell in October 2009. His awards and decorations include: Bronze Star Medal; the Purple Heart; National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal and Combat Action Badge.

Buffalo is survived by his father, Cecil M. Buffalo of Mountain Pine, Ark. and his mother, Anjanette D. Buffalo of West Bend, Wis.
