History

The current Miamisburg High School was built in 1972 at approximately 100,000 sf and originally featured the controversial but then-popular open plan concept with three classroom pods (the 100's, 300's and 500's) forming a triangle around a center core and a 16,000 square feet (1,500 m2) commons area, the largest "room" in the Miamisburg school district. Although unorthodox in its design, the new Miamisburg High School was highly regarded for its extensive use of carpeting, internal brickwork, vaulted ceilings, and air conditioning, all of which were uncommon in the early 1970s. The original structure was designed by architect Marlin Heist who also designed LaVeta Bauer Elementary School on Springboro Pike in 1967.

The academic pods were completely reprogrammed to follow a more traditional layout within just a few years and MHS received its first addition in 1980. This involved construction of a 32,000 square feet (3,000 m2) two-story gymnasium complex complete with a running track and gymnastics area, locker rooms, and fine arts classrooms (known as the 600's wing). In 1982, a 16,000 square feet (1,500 m2) classroom wing was added which gave the school 16 more classrooms (the 400's wing). These expansions were designed by Van Buren & Firestone Architects and were constructed at the rear corners of the facility.

Rounding out these expansions to Miamisburg High School is a modern, 29,000-square-foot (2,700 m2), two-story, glass and brick addition constructed at the front of the school in 1993, providing an entirely new facade. This new addition (known as the 200's wing) includes 20 classrooms (including five science labs and two computer labs), administrative suites, a teachers lounge, and a bright, two-story atrium which serves as a student commons area and entrance lobby. The upper level hallways are tied together by a bridge that spans the atrium. The 1993 addition was designed by Levin-Porter Associates.

The school encompasses 186,375 square feet (17,314.8 m2) of floor space and has a 100% capacity mark set at 1,372 students. The school currently has over 1,600. The Miamisburg City School District had plans to build a new, 2,000-student comprehensive high school but voters turned down the idea for many years forcing the district to scrap their plans. Since the year 2002, the high school has been faced with overcrowding issues as the student population climbed beyond 1,400.

On November 14, 2007 the Miamisburg School Board announced its plans to expand the high school once again in the form of a 58,000 square feet (5,400 m2) addition and an extremely extensive renovation of the existing facility, including the complete demolition of two of the four "pods" from 1972. Funded to the tune of $20 million, this project will be complete in August 2012.

The Miamisburg High School addition and renovation project includes 125,000 square feet (11,600 m2) of new construction but also nearly 50,000 square feet (4,600 m2) of demolition. The expansion and remodeling of MHS includes an auxiliary gymnasium, associated locker rooms, a new, state-of-the-art weight room plus athletic training suite, approximately 40 new classrooms (net gain of roughly 20) including those for science, art/ceramics, and life skills/home economics, upgrades and expansions to the cafeteria/commons area, new space for administration, relocation of the guidance office to the 200's wing, three security vestibules (one at the main entrance and one each at the two side entrances), an expanded and redesigned media center, an outdoor courtyard, new teacher workrooms, plus a number of renovated classrooms, hallways and bathrooms. Outside of the facility itself, the driveways, parking lots and entrances/exits on the Miamisburg High School campus will be modified, relocated and/or expanded.

The additions/renovations are being completed in four phases with Phases I and II already completed; Phase III is currently underway. Phase I was complete in August 2009 and included physical site work. Phase II was complete in August 2010 and included the construction of the auxiliary gymnasium, the western entrance, and some renovations throughout the facility. Until Phase IV is finished, the auxiliary gym will serve as 10 temporary classrooms while other areas are replaced and/or renovated. Phase III is the largest of the four and involves replacement of the 300's pod with a new two-story classroom wing: completed in the summer of 2011. The last phase includes the demolition of the 100's pod and erecting a new two-story wing in its place. All additions and renovations are slated for completion by the end of August 2012. The two new classroom wings will serve as de facto extensions at each end of the current 200's wing (1993). The new construction is being designed to follow the aesthetics of the 1993 wing including its characteristic windows, brick face, and decorative massing. Interior renovations are taking place throughout the entire project. The upgraded and enlarged Miamisburg High School will cover approximately 260,000 sf with capacity for approximately 1,900 students. The current Miamisburg High School additions and renovations have been designed by the internationally recognized architecture/engineering firm of SSOE.

In its Miamisburg City Schools Facilities Master Plan, SSOE indicated that future possible expansions at Miamisburg High School have been identified and will be constructed in the coming decades to accommodate additional growth beyond 2,000 students.
