Sebastian won the first series of Australian Idol in 2003, and gained a record deal with Sony BMG Australia as a result. His six albums have all charted in the top 10 of the ARIA Album Charts and reached either platinum or multi platinum accreditation.[1][2] Seven of his singles have reached the top 10 of the ARIA Singles Charts, including five No. 1's, and he has had three other top 15 singles. Sebastian is the only Australian male artist to achieve five No. 1 singles in Australian music history, and is in equal third place with Olivia Newton John for all Australian acts.[3] He has also reached the top 10 of the New Zealand Charts with an album and four singles, including two No. 1's.[4] Sebastian has attained 26 platinum and two gold certifications in Australia and four platinum and two gold certifications in New Zealand.
Sebastian's winner's single "Angels Brought Me Here", and debut album Just as I Am were both ARIA No. 1 multi-platinum sellers.[2][5][6] "Angels Brought Me Here" was the first Australian artist single to reach 4 x platinum certification in Australian chart history, and in January 2010 ARIA announced it was the highest selling song of the previous decade.[7] The second single "All I Need Is You" also debuted at No. 1 and reached platinum accreditation.[2][8] In 2004 Sebastian released his second album Beautiful Life, which showcased a stronger contemporary R&B sound. The lead single "Out With My Baby" became his third consecutive ARIA number one single.[2] The album debuted at No. 2 and gained platinum certification and eventually sold over 100,000 units[9] Sebastian's third album Closer to the Sun, released in 2006, was a mix of a number of genres, including pop-rock, soul, and jazz. It debuted at No. 4 and was also a platinum seller, producing two gold singles.[10]
The Memphis Album , a cover album of soul classics, recorded in Memphis with Steve Cropper and other members of American soul band the MGs was released in 2007. It reaching No.3 and gaining double platinum certification.[11] In 2009 Sebastian released his fifth studio album Like It Like That, an original soul album which showed the influences of his Memphis soul period. The album debuted at No. 6 and gained platinum accreditation.[2][12] The title track was released as the first single and reached No. 1 and triple platinum accreditation and was the highest selling song by an Australian artist in 2009.[13][14] The second single "Art of Love" peaked at No. 8 and achieved platinum accreditation.[13] Sebastian was nominated for six ARIA Music Awards for this album, including "Best Pop Release" and "Best Male Artist".[15] Sebastian's sixth album Twenty Ten, a retrospective album with songs from his previous albums, two new songs and ten acoustic tracks was released in November 2010. It reached a peak of No. 4 on the ARIA album chart and was certified platinum.[12] The lead single "Who's That Girl", which features US rapper Eve, reached No. 1, and became the fourth Australian artist single in Australian chart history to reach 4 x platinum certification.[16][2][17] Sebastian received four ARIA nominations for "Who's That Girl", including "Single of the Year", "Best Pop Release" and "Highest Selling Single".[18]
