St John the Evangelist Friday Street [ [http://www.british-history.ac.uk/search.aspx?query=St.%20John%20the%20Evangelist&rf=pubid:155 Sometimes referred to as St Werburgh, Friday Street] ] was a former church in the City of London.
The Mortality Bill for the year 1665, published by the "Parish Clerk’s Company", shows 97 parishes within the City of London. [ "The ancient office of Parish Clerk and the Parish Clerks Company of London" Clark, O :London, Journal of the Ecclesiastical Law Society Vol 8, January 2006 ISSN: 0956-618X ] By September 6th the city lay in ruins, 86 churches having been destroyed. [ The "Churches of the City of London" Reynolds,H: London, Bodley Head, 1922] In 1670 a Rebuilding Act was passed and a committee set up under the stewardship of Sir Christopher Wren to decide which would be rebuilt. [ "Wren" Whinney,M London Thames & Hudson, 1971 ISBN 0500201129] Fifty-one were chosen, but St John the Evangelist Friday Street in Bread Street Ward was one of the minority never to be rebuilt, [ "The City of London Churches" Betjeman, J. Andover, Pitkin, 1967 (rpnt 1992) ISBN 0853725659 ] perhaps because it was the smallest church [Just under an acre ”Vanished Churches of the City of London” Huelin,G London Guildhall Library Publishing 1996 ISBN 0900422424] within even this area of very small parishes. The church site is now occupied by a public house off Watling Street. It is unique amongst City parishes in not registering a single death during the Great Plague [ “The City of London-a history” Borer,M.I.C. : New York,D.McKay Co, 1978 ISBN 0094618801] . Following the fire it was united to All Hallows Bread Street. [ “The registers of All Hallows Bread Street and St John the Evangelist Friday Street” Bannerman, W.B: London, Harleian Society, 1913] Partial records still survive at IGI. [ [http://www.gendocs.demon.co.uk/city-ch.html Genealogical Web-Site] ] .
