Aurelio Suárez

Aurelio Suárez (14 January 1910 Gijón - 10 April de 2003 Gijón) is a Spanish Surrealism painter. He developed quite an extensive work applying also other styles of painting.

Biography

He was born in Gijón were he held his first exhibition when he was 19 years old at the "Escuela Superior de Comerio". He mixed his surrelistic imagination with images of his life: the city, people and self-portraits. He also worked for magazines drawing comics strips or even designing for dishes and ceramics. In 1934, he had an exhibition in the Modern Art Museum of Madrid (currently Museo Reina Sofía).

Artwork

He mainly created surrealistic pictures, but the series of pictures he did cover also other styles of painting. In the 1950s he drew several naive images. Romantic pictures, with persons or shapes like flowers, where also part of the imagination of his pictures.

The bigger effort of the imagination can be seen in the guaches and sketches, where he created many series of 100 pieces. He had a great drawing ability as he could manage several styles and techniques at the time.

He basically worked with three different formats and techniques for his Surrealism paintings:
* A reverse signature along with the drawing of a fish.
* Every single picture has the title on its back and also the date.
* It the picture had ever been at an exhibition, it is signed with a cross at the back

The sizes for his drawings were very standard:
* Oil painting of 38 x 46 cm.
* Guaches of 35 x 47 cm.
* Sketches of 23 x 17 cm.

Oil painting consisted of series of 12 pictures with a similar topic and style. Sketches consisted of series of 100 with the title and date at the back. Every series also had a similar topic and style.
