Tobyhanna Township is a township in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 6,152 at the 2000 census. Tobyhanna Township has Tobyhanna Elementary Center and Locust Lake Village.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 52.8 square miles (136.8 km²), of which, 50.4 square miles (130.6 km²) of it is land and 2.4 square miles (6.2 km²) of it (4.52%) is water.

History

Tobyhanna is derived from an American Indian word meaning "a stream whose banks are fringed with alder", i.e. the Tobyhanna Creek. Legally, Tobyhanna Township, was incorporated from Coolbaugh Township in 1830. [http://www.tobyhannatownship.org/about.htm] Surprisingly, the town of Tobyhanna, Tobyhanna Lake, the Tobyhanna Army Depot, and the Tobyhanna State Park are all located well within the boundaries of Coolbaugh Township, which adjoins Tobyhanna Township on the north. Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 6,152 people, 2,420 households, and 1,747 families residing in the township. The population density was 122.0 people per square mile (47.1/km²). There were 6,199 housing units at an average density of 122.9/sq mi (47.5/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 92.34% White, 3.98% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.20% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.07% of the population.

There were 2,420 households out of which 30.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% were non-families. 22.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the township the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.0 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $43,211, and the median income for a family was $44,651. Males had a median income of $36,639 versus $28,194 for females. The per capita income for the township was $20,726. About 8.1% of families and 10.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.1% of those under age 18 and 8.5% of those age 65 or over.
