Brighton, Pavilion is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

Boundaries

The constituency is in Brighton, in the South East of England. It is named after the Royal Pavilion found within its boundaries. Traditionally a safe Tory seat, it swung heavily (after boundary changes) in Labour's favour in their 1997 landslide victory. Labour retained the seat in subsequent elections but has seen its vote share fall markedly, with the Green Party increasing in popularity during the same period, taking over 20% of the vote in a third place finish in 2005.

History

The constituency was created in 1950 out of the Brighton constituency, which Brighton, Pavilion's first Member of Parliament, William Teeling, had previously represented.

The constituency is regarded as the Green Party's main target and could become their first parliamentary gain [http://www.theargus.co.uk/display.var.1385462.0.0.php] . In the 2005 election the Green Party won 22%, beating the Liberal Democrats into fourth place.

David Lepper has said he will not contest the next General Election, and the local Labour Party has selected Nancy Platts to succeed him as Labour candidate.
