Characteristic time

Characteristic time

The characteristic time is an estimate of the order of magnitude of the reaction time scale. It can loosely be defined as the inverse of the reaction rate. In chemistry, the characteristic time is used to determine whether the problem needs to be solved as an equilibrium problem or a kinetic problem.

  • For RC circuits, the characteristic time is the time the capacitor takes to discharge by 1/e (approximately 63%) of the way to the final voltage.

four features of time are- 1. it is impossible to find exact instant of time. 2.the smallest time interval present in a given time interval say it (x) is infinite. 3.the longest time interval has value infinite with respect to any time time interval in it. 4.the smallest time interval is t2-t1= tends to 0 bt not zero.
