Highland Falls, formerly named Buttermilk Falls, is a village in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 3,678 at the 2000 census. The village was founded in 1906.

Highland Falls is in the Town of Highlands and is adjacent to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Geography

Highland Falls is located at coor dms|41|22|7|N|73|58|5|W|city (41.368527, -73.968072)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.9 km²), of which, 1.1 square miles (2.9 km²) of it is land and 0.89% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 3,678 people, 1,567 households, and 922 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,326.4 people per square mile (1,279.4/km²). There were 1,657 housing units at an average density of 1,498.6/sq mi (576.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 76.94% White, 12.75% African American, 0.38% Native American, 2.18% Asian, 0.19% Pacific Islander, 3.78% from other races, and 3.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.58% of the population.

There were 1,567 households out of which 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.6% were married couples living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.1% were non-families. 35.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.13.

In the village the population was spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $45,833, and the median income for a family was $57,885. Males had a median income of $41,833 versus $29,488 for females. The per capita income for the village was $24,100. About 3.9% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.9% of those under age 18 and 3.6% of those age 65 or over.

Notable Facts

*Billy Joel's song "Summer, Highland Falls" refers to Highland Falls, New York, but the town is only mentioned in the title of the song. Joel lived in the Cragston neighborhood of Highland Falls in the 1970s.

*Following 444 days as hostages in Iran, the group of 52 Americans passed through Highland Falls, nicknamed "Hometown U.S.A" by the media as they traveled to West Point, NY.

*Town of Highlands operates with 2 fully volunteer Fire Departments, which are 2 of the oldest in the county of Orange(Highland Falls Fire Department, established 1922, and Fort Montgomery Fire Department, established 1923) and the Town of Highlands Ambulance Corps, a fully volunteer Ambulance service providing basic life support level care since 1954 and operates with 37 volunteer EMT's and EMD's (Emergency Medical Drivers).
