Its seat is the town of Pieńsk, which lies approximately convert|11|km|mi|0 north of Zgorzelec, and convert|140|km|mi|0 west of the regional capital Wrocław.

The gmina covers an area of convert|110.33|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 9,272 (out of which the population of Pieńsk amounts to 5,799, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 3,473).

Gmina Pieńsk is bordered by the gminas of Lubań, Nowogrodziec, Węgliniec and Zgorzelec. It also borders Germany.
