Clear Spring is a town in Washington County, Maryland, United States. The population was 461 as of the 2008 United States Census Bureau estimates.[1]

Geography

Clear Spring is located at 39°39′22″N 77°55′51″W / 39.65611°N 77.93083°W / 39.65611; -77.93083 (39.656011, -77.930828)[2].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2), all of it land.

The town is situated at the eastern base of Fairview Mountain, along U.S. Route 40 and Interstate 70. The area is underlain by Conococheague limestone. The spring for which the town is named is the only local source of ground water, from which the local run, Tom's Run, receives its volume.

Demographics

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 455 people, 195 households, and 124 families residing in the town. The population density was 4,214.2 people per square mile (1,597.1/km²). There were 210 housing units at an average density of 1,945.0 per square mile (737.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.02% White, 0.88% Asian, and 1.10% from two or more races.

There were 195 households out of which 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.6% were married couples living together, 14.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.85.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 32.3% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $38,056, and the median income for a family was $38,750. Males had a median income of $32,411 versus $24,688 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,774. About 9.1% of families and 12.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 23.4% of those under age 18 and 1.4% of those age 65 or over.

Education

Clear Spring is the home of Clear Spring High School, which hosts the home field of the Blazers.
