National Highway 4 (Cambodia)

National Highway 4 or National Road No.4 (10004) (in Khmer ផ្លូវជាតិលេខ ៤) is one of the national highways of Cambodia. With a length of 230 km (140 mi),^[1] it connects the capital of Phnom Penh with Sihanoukville in the south-west.^[2] Sihanoukville is the only sea international port of Cambodia. In consequence, NH4 is one of the most important highways of the country for economical purposes. The road was built in the 1950s along with the construction of the port.^[3]

The road has been built especially for the transport of merchandise between the capital and the port by heavy trucks and containers. It has three toll stations along. However, it is considered the most dangerous road of Cambodia due to several traffic accidents and little control by authorities.^[4]

Description

The road begins at the junction of Pochentong Avenue and the National Highway 3. The junction is at the west of Phnom Penh, just near the Phnom Penh International Airport, in the Sangkat Chaom Chau - Dangkor District. The road goes to the right hand toward the west and after the south west.

After the first toll road, it enters the Kandal Province. It crosses Kampong Speu, Koh Kong and Sihanoukville provinces. In the territory of Koh Kong, at Chamkar Luong, starts the National Road 48 to Koh Kong town at the west and the Thailand border. In the territory of Sihanoukville, at Prey Nob District, it starts the NH3 to Kompot to the east and the Vietnamese border.

Important places along the road

Kirirom National Park is located along the highway as is the town of Sre Ambel.^[5]
