José Carlos da Silva José (born 22 September 1941), commonly known as just José Carlos, is a Portuguese former footballer, who played mostly as central defender, most famously for Sporting Clube de Portugal and for his country.

Born in Vila Franca de Xira, he played for CUF in Barreiro, and moved, in 1962–63, to Sporting, where he reached stardom.[1] He won several titles of National Champion and the Cup of Portugal. He was also a Cup of the Cups winner, in 1964.

He had 36 caps for the Portugal national football team, three for CUF, and 33 for Sporting[2], from the 6–0 win over Luxembourg, on 19 March 1961, in the World Cup qualifiers, to the 5–0 win over Denmark, in 12 May 1971, for the European Championship qualifyings.[3]

He was a member of the squad that reached 3rd place in the 1966 FIFA World Cup finals, in England, playing in the semi-finals loss to the home nation (1-2), and in the match for the 3rd place win over the U.S.S.R. (2-1).[4]
