Amounderness

Amounderness

Amounderness ("Andernes" in ancient times) is an area of northwest England. In its most recent incarnation it was a hundred of Lancashire. Previously the name had been used for territories now in Lancashire and north of the River Ribble that had been included in the Domesday Book's Yorkshire section.

Amounderness (first seen written in 661) comes from the Norse for “a ness or promontory sheltered by oaks”.fact|date=August 2008 Some historians wrongly think that it took its name from Agmundr, a Norse warlord who died in battle in the Ribble valley in AD911,cite web

] and is preserved in the Fylde's present-day Amounderness Way, part of the A585 which runs between Mains Lane in Thornton and Copse Road in Fleetwood.

The hundred of Amounderness corresponds to today's administrative districts of Fylde, Wyre, Preston and part of Ribble Valley (north of the Ribble and within the historic boundaries of Lancashire). It included Bispham, Blackpool, Broughton-in-Amounderness, Chipping, Cockerham, Garstang, Kirkham, Knott End-on-Sea, Mitton, Pilling, Preesall, Poulton-le-Fylde, Preston, and Ribchester.
