John Harry Goldthorpe (born
27 May 1935 ) is a Britishsociologist . He is emeritus of Nuffield College, Oxford. He works in the areas ofsocial stratification ,macrosociology , and recentlycultural consumption .John Goldthorpe has contributed to the understanding of
social mobility . His work on social class led to the well-establishedGoldthorpe class schema , one of the standard approaches to classify class in sociology. The Goldthorpe class schema is based on eleven classes, which are grouped into three main clusters—theservice class , the intermediate class, and the working class.Goldthorpe is also well-known for his work on the
embourgeoisement thesis which he dispelled in 1963; or his contributions torational choice theory . He was elected a Fellow of theBritish Academy in 1984.He was a student ofNorbert Elias .Works
