List of fictional counties

Fictional counties are created by an author for character placement and story background.

Argentina

*Uqbar, (from Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius), Jorge Luis Borges's fictional country.
*Aquilea, from Invasión, created by Jorge Luis Borges and Hugo Santiago.

Canada

* Missinabi County, Ontario - the fictional county seat is Stephen Leacock's equally fictional Mariposa in "Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town".
* Possum County, Ontario - the fictional county which is the setting for the "The Red Green Show" on CBC.

England

* Barsetshire - fictional locale of Anthony Trollope's Chronicles of Barsetshire novel series and also various other authors.
*Borsetshire - fictional county containing the village of Ambridge in the BBC's long-running radio drama "The Archers"
* Diddlesex - used in the satirical Punch magazine in the 1840s as the abode of an ex-servant who becomes rich.
* Downshire - location of the fictional village of St. Mary Mead in "The Murder at the Vicarage" by Agatha Christie (also stated to be in Radfordshire)
* Glebeshire - the setting of many of Hugh Walpole's novels.
* Glenshire - location of the fictional seaside resort of Dilmouth in the "The Body in the Library" by Agatha Christie
* Loamshire - George Eliot's fictional locale, also used by other authors, such as Donald Jack in his play The Canvas Barricade, in which the butler is the rightful Duke of Loamshire; most notably it is home of the Loamshire Regiment. Kenneth Tynan was critical of a type of play he called 'the Loamshire play', an English middle-class country-house drama. He claimed this was almost the only type of play being written in 1950s Britain.
* Mertonshire - setting of "The Horses of Diomedes" in "The Labours of Hercules" by Agatha Christie
* Mortshire - used in the works of Edward Gorey.
* Midsomer - setting of "Midsomer Murders".
* Naptonshire - setting for Home Defence training simulations of the 1970s, [http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0160-5682(197910)30%3A10%3C861%3AACSOTD%3E2.0.CO%3B2-E] analogous to Northamptonshire
* Quantumshire - from "Nebulous".
* Radfordshire - the setting for St. Mary Mead in some of the Miss Marple novels and short stories by Agatha Christie: but also stated to be Downshire. This county is close to or borders the fictional counties of Glenshire, Southshire and Middleshire.
* Rutshire - setting of the Rutshire Chronicles by Jilly Cooper
* Slopshire - county in the West Country containing Puddleby-on-the-Marsh, home of Doctor Dolittle
* South Riding of Yorkshire - setting for "South Riding" by Winifred Holtby.
*Trumptonshire - setting of the interrelated TV series "Camberwick Green", "Trumpton", and "Chigley"
*Wessex - location of Thomas Hardy's novels
* Winshire - setting of "The Midwich Cuckoos".
* Worfordshire or to be more precise South Worfordshire - the setting in English/Welsh borderlands for the novel "Blott on the Landscape" by Tom Sharpe
* Wyvern - county incorporating the fictional city of Holby (based on Bristol), the setting for BBC drama productions "Casualty", "Holby City", and "HolbyBlue"

* Balboa County, California - location of Neptune in "Veronica Mars"
* Beechum County, Alabama - fictional setting of the movie "My Cousin Vinny"
* Belken County, Texas - Rio Grande Valley setting of Rolando Hinojosa-Smith's novels of the Klail City Death Trip Series (KCDTS)
* Blackwood County, Texas - scenes from ""
* Bloom County, unspecified state - rural setting of the comic strip of the same name.
* Bone County, San Andreas - one of five counties in the video game ""
* Braddock County, Texas - site of the fictional Southfork Ranch on the TV show "Dallas"
* Caldecott County, Mississippi - home of the Marvel Comics character Rogue
* Calusa County, Florida - home base of fictional defense attorney, Matthew Hope, created by mystery author Ed McBain
* Carburetor County, New Mexico - location of Radiator Springs in "Cars"
* Castle County, Maine - location of Castle Rock and Castle View
* Chinquapin Parish, Louisiana - setting for "Steel Magnolias"
* Cobblestone County, California - the home of Bedrock in "The Flintstones"
* Dougal County, Georgia - the rural setting of "Squidbillies"
* Flint County, San Andreas - one of five counties in the video game ""
* Greenbow County, Alabama - from "Forrest Gump"
* Haddonfield, Illinois - setting of the "Halloween" films
* Hazzard County, Georgia - setting of the television series "The Dukes of Hazzard"
* Heimlich County, Texas - setting of the television series "King of the Hill", includes the fictional towns of Arlen and McManerbury.
* Herndon County, Minnesota? - workplace of Ruth Harrison, the contentious reference librarian whose adventures are occasionally featured on "A Prairie Home Companion"
* Hill County, California - setting of the "Back to the Future" films, includes the fictional towns of Hill Valley, Elmdale and Haysville
* Huntington County, New Jersey - the setting of the wealthy town of Vlyvalle in Dirk Wittenborn's novel "Fierce People". Possibly based on Hunterdon County.
* Ironwood County, Minnesota - the setting for the Ironwood County novels by John Schreiber.
* Jefferson County, Virginia - setting of the television series "The Waltons"
* Kindle County, unspecified Midwestern United States state - setting for most Scott Turow novels
* Kornfield Kounty, unspecified state - setting of variety show "Hee Haw"
* Livermore County, California - setting of some activity in Tom Wolfe's "A Man in Full". Refers to southeastern Alameda County, California, where Livermore is located.
* Mayberry County, North Carolina - setting of Mayberry from "The Andy Griffith Show".
* Maycomb County, Alabama - fictional setting for Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird"
* Mississinewa County (through which flows the Mississinewa River) – fictional county of poet Jared Carter
* Mist County, Minnesota - the county seat is Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon
