It is located in the province of
Eastern Finlandand is part of the North Kareliaregion. The municipality has a population of 6,764 (as of January 1, 2006) and covers an area of 1,088.25 km² of which 149.30 km² is water. The population densityis 6.2 inhabitants per km². Eno railway stationis the first station north of Joensuuon the VR railway between Joensuu and Nurmes.
The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
