Omalur (Tamil: ஓமலூர்) is a panchayat town in Salem District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is situated on the National Highway 7 between 11° 73333" latitude and 78° 06667" longitude. It has a population of about 13,600. Agriculture, leather and handloom textiles are the major business. It is the second largest taluk in the district of Salem. Omalur has 95 census villages.

History

In 14th century, Omalur Kottai built.

The Madurai Nayaks ruled Kongu Nadu, the Gatti Mudalis were the made in-charge of Omalur, Taramangalam and others. They built the temple at Taramangalam which is an architectural wonder. The Salem district, the most dangerously exposed province of the Madurai Nayaks rule. They ruled from Taramangalam, where they built a costly temple. In Salem district, they held the important strategic fort of Omalur and Attur.

The Gatti Mudalis's rule extended east-west from Thalaivasal to Dharapuram and north-south from Omalur to Karur. After the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire, the Gatti Mudalis became the Palaiyakkarar of Omalur under Tirumalai Nayak of Madurai in 1623.

In 1660, Chikka Deveraja conquered Sankagiri, Thoppur and Omalur. In 1667, the Gatti Mudalis lost Omalur to Mysore. In 1688-89, Chikka Deva Raya, the king of Mysore, felt strong enough once again to invade Baramahal and the whole district of Salem came under his control before his death in 1704.

In 1815 Omalur taluk was absorbed into Salem taluk, but was recreated in 1819. It was again absorbed by Salem taluk in 1860, and again recreated in 1910. In 1916 Omalur taluk bifurcated into Omalur and Mettur, and in 1941 Mettur Taluk was absorbed into Omalur.

Geography

Omalur is located at 11°44′N 78°04′E / 11.73°N 78.07°E / 11.73; 78.07.[1] It has an average elevation of 298 metres (977 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Omalur had a population of 12,536. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Omalur has an average literacy rate of 64%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 71%, and female literacy is 58%. In Omalur, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Climate

The climate is generally hot and dry. Summer stretches from February to July with its peak during the months of April and May. Temperatures stay above 30°C and can reach 37°C. During this time it gets occasional spells of rain. During the months of August and September the South-West monsoons start and bring about 100 mm of rain. In October and November it receives the North-East monsoon.

  • Saminakayanpatty - is a large village with 90% of people belonging to the scheduled caste. the remaining 10% population belong to the backward caste. This village is having 74% literacy rate and almost all members of this village had been working in the magnesite companies located around this village. A new colony belonging to the main village was formed on the panchayat road after Anaigoundanpatty but before the salem bangalore and mettur dam railway route. This village is well supplied by mettur water through the municipal water. This village is well supplied with electricity. There is an educational institute developed for Teacher training named as KEVI teacher training institute which is a minority institution (Mainly for islamic people) but other religious members are also provided with educational opportunity but under payment category. This village is having a primary government school catering for the children from this village and also supplied with the mid-day meal school programme. there are mini grocery shops within this village and is also equipped with public distribution system (Ration shop). It has its own postal office with a post master heading the same. This village is having many temples of which the most famous is the Saminaickenpatty Kannanur Mariamman temple. Once in a year a grand festival is celebrated with goat and hen sacrifice for the temple. The celebrate this festival by inviting their friends and relatives from salem town and neigbouring villages. The temple cart is taken around the streets of Saminaickenpatty for people prayer. during the 3rd day, local youths conduct stage programmes with drama, debates and short cinemas. Prominent memebrs of this village contribute liquid cash for this celebration. This village has produced Engineers, Doctors and Business administration graduates. The first Doctor from this Village was from a Middle class family having educated in one of the best catholic school "Holy cross matriculation Higher secondary school" located at Ammapet, Salem. This candidate was successful through the Tamilnadu state professional competitive examination and did his bachelor medical degree from the most famous institue "Madras Medical College" located at Chennai, Tamilnadu. He further completed his postgraduate degree from the Christian Medical college located at Vellore, Tamilnadu. After his higher education he worked at Jawaharlal Institute of post graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Pondicherry. He then became a permanent state government employee by serving as Assistant Civil Surgeon in the KAP Viswanatham Government Medical college, located at Trichy, Tamilnadu. He then completed his Board certification from the American Society of Medical and Public Health Microbiology, in Washington, USA. He has immense work experience in reputed Health care institutes around the world most notable from the Middle East. He is a jewel in the crown of Saminaickenpatti. There are no health care facility available within the village and all the local population visit government hospital in Omalur or Salem. Though many small private outpatient clinics are available, tertiary care level treatment could be acquired only in the Salem city and access to the city is very easy and so health care facility for this village is affordable provided by the State government. There are many secondary care level hospitals, but the expenses are exorbitant. Hence, for such a large population a primary care level health care facility would be a boon for this village. Almost all houses in this village have two wheelers and some have four wheelers for transport. The state government's mini buses are plying between omalur and salem steel plant and salem junction and all these buses ply through this village. There are small scale ash brick industries located opposite to the new colony of Saminaickenpatty village. The speciality of this village is that more than 90% of these villagers are closely related.
