Jan Břečka

Jan Břečka

Jan Břečka (born 1975) is a Czech flatwater canoer and current (2006) world champion in the Canadian canoe C4 200m.

Already a five-times European champion as a member of the Czech C4 200m crew (1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005), it seemed that Břečka was destined never to win a world championship gold medal. He had won three consecutive silvers (2001, 2002, 2003) in the same C4 200m event. However, at the 2006 Flatwater Racing World Championships in Szeged, Hungary, he finally won his first world title, as the Czech four beat Belarus by 0.08 seconds.

He also competes in the C2. With partner Petr Procházka he won a C2 200m European bronze medal in 1999 and a silver medal in 2000. The pair also represented the Czech Republic at the Sydney Olympics in the C2 500m. His current C2 partner is Jiří Heller.

Břečka is 190cm (6'3") tall and weighs 85kg (187 lbs). A member of the Dukla Canoe Club in Prague, he also represents the Czech Republic in Dragon boat racing. He is married to pole vaulter Daniela Bártová.
