"Eve" was the eleventh episode of the first season of "The X-Files" science-fiction television series created by Chris Carter. It is based around cloning.

Plot

The episode begins in a neighborhood in Greenwich, Connecticut. A jogging couple notices a little girl named Teena Simmons standing alone in her driveway, clutching her teddy bear. The joggers, who are apparently friends of her family, ask Teena why she is standing by herself, and ask where her father Joel is. Teena responds that he is in the backyard, wanting to spend some time to himself. The male jogger travels to the backyard, followed by his spouse and Teena, to find Joel slumped in Teena's swing set. He soon discovers that Joel is long dead, with two incision marks on his neck.

At his office in the J. Edgar Hoover Building, Mulder reviews the case with Scully. Scully notes that over four liters of blood was drained from Joel Simmon's body, along with a herbal sedative found in his tissues. Mulder believes Joel Simmons' death is a unique example of extraterrestrial cattle mutilation on a human being, and both begin an investigation.

Mulder and Scully interview Teena in an orphanage in Connecticut. Scully asks if her father ever had any conflicts with people that would want to hurt him, but Teena shakes her head. When Mulder asks Teena if she remembers seeing any strange lights, she replies that "there was red lightning." Teena reveals that she has seen the red lightning before, and that "men from the clouds" had wanted to drain her father's blood. Scully, who has been distracted by a call on her cell phone, tells Mulder that "there's been another one." Later that night, Teena is kidnapped.

In Marin County, California, near San Francisco, the two agents visit the home of the Reardons, who have suffered from an exactly similar tragedy: the husband and father of the family was found dead in the backyard's swing-set, the blood drained out of him. Since the Reardon family is away to cope with the tragedy, Mulder and Scully decide to visit the house again when they return the following day. They conclude that the fathers had been murdered at the exact same moment on the exact same day, despite their distance.

As Scully reviews the clinic's records on the Simmons and Reardon families, after noticing that both family's daughters were identical in appearance, and she discovers that they were both treated by a woman named Dr. Sally Kendrick for fertilization. The clinic's head doctor is distressed at the mere mention of her name, and he soon explains why to Scully. Despite her brilliant pedigree, the clinic was forced to fire Dr. Kendrick after it was discovered she was carrying out eugenics experiments with ova in the clinic's lab. She was censured by the American Medical Association, but the head doctor's request for an investigation by the U.S. Health Department was denied. Soon after she was fired, Dr. Kendrick disappeared.

That night, after Scully shares the new information with Mulder, he is summoned to a meeting with Deep Throat. Deep Throat tells Mulder of the U.S. Government's efforts to create genetically enhanced children to be eventually molded into supersoldiers -- a project called the Litchfield Experiment. The children created by the project were raised in a secret compound near Litchfield, Connecticut, and were identified as either "Adam" or "Eve" in accordance with their genders. Deep Throat then tells Mulder of a woman connected with the Litchfield Experiment, currently kept in a hospital for the criminally insane.

After meeting with "Eve 6" within the confines of the hospital, they discover that the clones created in the project displayed super human intelligence and strength, but were flawed with increased psychosis and homicidal tendencies - Eve 6, 7 and 8 institutionalized and the others dead via suicide (Eve 7 and 8 later escaped their confines). The Litchfield Experiment was canceled because of this, with all records destroyed and officials denying its existence. However, the Eve known as Dr. Sally Kendrick was continuing the project in her own way, modifying the ova of patients to create new and improved Eve clones.

Anticipating the kidnap of the Reardon's daughter Cindy, both Mulder and Scully lay in wait at their house that night. Eventually, the kidnapper strikes and they discover it is one of the escaped Eves doing the kidnapping as they make off with Cindy. While they both search for the missing girls, the plot breaks to the perspective of the Eve kidnapper. She takes Cindy to a hotel room where she already has Teena (who is bound and blindfolded), and introduces the two girls to each other. The adult Eve reveals that she was raised differently from the other Eves and has a sense of humanity and proper medication to curb the flaws of the project, and tells Teena and Cindy she kidnapped them to give them the proper help they need. Immediately after this, she breaks into convulsions. Teena and Cindy reveal they laced her drink with a Foxglove-derived poison, and both of them had murdered their fathers and share a mental connection.

As both the police and the agents close in on the motel, discovered from an ID of the kidnapper's car, they are alerted by a crash. Inside the room they find the kidnapper dead, a window broken and the girls cowering together. The girls say there were two Eves, and they were attempting to goad the girls into a mass suicide via the poisoned drinks. Mulder and Scully being aware of the Eve project decide to have the girls examined before returning them to their homes.

While driving, both girls ask to use the bathroom and Scully mentions she could use a soda herself. They all arrive at a diner and while in the bathrooms, one of the girls sneaks out and grabs the sodas that were ordered. She poisons the drinks with the same poison used on the Eve, but when Mulder returns to the diner to retrieve his keys he notices the poison's residue on the table. After an attempted escape, both girls are taken to the same asylum Eve 6 was kept in.

The episode concludes with Teena Simmons and Cindy Reardon, now kept in separate cells and sharing the ward with Eve 6 in the mental hospital, given the monikers "Eve 9" and "Eve 10". Eventually a woman wearing a lab coat and identified by one of the girls as Eve 8 comes to the ward. When Eve 8 asks the girls how they knew she would come for them, the girls each respond, "We just knew."
