Annur is a panchayat town in Coimbatore district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

Geography

Demographics

As of 2007 India census, [GR|India] Annur had a population of 18,242 Males constitute 45% of the population and females 55%. Annur has an average literacy rate of 6%, higher than the national average of 9.5%; with 54% of the males and 55% of females literate.

References

The name Annur came from "Vanniyur", later transformed into Anniyur and now Annur. The myth behind the name goes like, Above 1000 years ago, when a small hunter hit a stone under a "Vanni" tree, it started bleeding. He was astonished and called the village people to look after this issue. Later they found a 'Suyambu' Lord Shiva Idol there and built a temple over there.

The famous temple is called Manneeswaraswamy Temple built 1000 years ago by Chera kings.Annur is also a cotton and textile manufacturing Hub comprising of Yarn spinning mills, 100 cotton ginning factories.It also has more than 100 edible oil mills.

Annur is one of the fastest growing towns in coimbatore district. Its sound business acumen, well connected roads to coimbatore, kerala and karnataka and diverse business opportunities made it one of the hottest business centres and real estate targets. Drinking water facility is a great gift to this town.

But Annur having only one Bank (IOB), that too its started very long back, IOB's 7th branch started here. Need to take steps to open two or more banks in this town. Huge textile transaction, Bus/Lorry operation, Oil/Cotton Market, agri and more other business hub this is, for all these only one bank is really not enough.

Demand has been tabled with Govt.of TN to annonce Annur as Taluk Head Quarters. Suzlon setting up a SEZ (Engg) near this town.

The town is also known for its powerful spinning industries. It was given the nickname "Kutty thanjavoor"

There are Two Government Higher secondary school,1 Girls Higher Secodary school and 5 matric schools located in and around Annur. The Oldest school is Amarar Muthugounder Memorial Higher Secondary School in Avinashi Road Annur.The school land was donated by Eminent Gongressian Sri Muthu Gounder & Family in the year 1956. The Lands present value is more than 15 crores. We must thank for the family for their gesture.
