St Margaret's Hospital is a closed maternity hospital in Sydney, Australia.
History
The hospital was founded by Getrude Abbott in 1893. It was located on Elizabeth Street in Strawberry Hills, and known as the St Margaret's Maternity Home. It was founded "to provide shelter and care for unmarried girls of the comparatively respectable class". In 1904, the hospital started an outpatients service, and in 1910 the hospital moved to its final location on Bourke Street in Surry Hills. The hospital was later run by the Sisters of St Joseph. At its peak, St Margaret's was the third largest maternity hospital in Sydney, and is a significant surviving art deco building. From 1961 to 1988, the hospital was a teaching hospital in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with the University of Sydney, from 1988 it changed its affiliation to the University of New South Wales.
Current Status
The site of St Margaret's is currently in the planning process for redevelopment into high density housing. There are local community concerns regarding the scale of the development, and a lack of community and open space.
