List of Royal Air Force aircraft squadrons

List of Royal Air Force aircraft squadrons

This is a list of Royal Air Force aircraft squadrons. It includes Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) squadrons incorporated into the Royal Air Force (RAF) when it was formed in April 1918, during the First World War. The list also includes squadrons from Commonwealth air forces which have served within the RAF structure. The list includes squadrons of the Fleet Air Arm before it transferred to the Royal Navy. Some squadrons are nowadays usually identified with Roman instead of Arabic numerals;Fact|date=September 2008 and these are shown as such in this list; although in many cases they formerly used Arabic numbers.

It should also be noted that the 700 series squadrons is used for training and operational conversion unit. Operational squadrons were numbered in the 800 series and during World War II 1700 and 1800 series was also used for operational squadrons.

quadrons passed to Royal Navy (700s and 800s)

While still under the control of the RAF, flights of the Fleet Air Arm were organized into squadrons with numbers in the 700 and 800 range. These subsequently became the Naval Air Squadrons (NAS) of the Royal Navy. [http://www.rafweb.org/Sqn712-825.htm. Accessed 3 April 2008] Squadrons in the range 700-799 were training and anicllary squadrons although the range 700 to 750 was originally allocated to Fleet Air Arm catapult units. quadron codes

From 1939 before the Second World War to the early 1950s, squadrons of the RAF used two letter codes to identify its aircraft. They were usually painted on the sides of the plane to the left of the roundel; a third letter after the roundel identified the individual aircraft within the squadron. [No squadron operated more than 26 aircraft] [ [http://www.btinternet.com/~lee_mail/rafcodes.html list of three-letter squadron codes] ]
