__NOTOC__Żagań County ( _pl. powiat żagański) is a unit of territorial administration and local government (powiat) in Lubusz Voivodeship, western Poland. It was created on January 1, 1999 as a result of the Local Government Reorganization Act of 1998. Its administrative seat and largest town is Żagań, which lies convert|39|km|mi|0|abbr=on south of Zielona Góra and convert|124|km|mi|0|abbr=on south of Gorzów Wielkopolski. The county contains four other towns: Szprotawa, lying convert|14|km|mi|0|abbr=on south-east of Żagań, Iłowa, lying convert|15|km|mi|0|abbr=on south-west of Żagań, Małomice, lying convert|12|km|mi|0|abbr=on south-east of Żagań, and Gozdnica, convert|25|km|mi|0|abbr=on south-west of Żagań.

The county covers an area of convert|1131.29|km2|sqmi|1. As of 2006 its total population is 82,226, out of which the population of Żagań is 26,580, that of Szprotawa is 12,613, that of Iłowa is 3,975, that of Małomice is 3,623, that of Gozdnica is 3,454, and the rural population is 31,981.

Neighbouring counties

Żagań County is bordered by Zielona Góra County to the north, Nowa Sól County to the north-east, Głogów County and Polkowice County to the east, Bolesławiec County and Zgorzelec County to the south, and Żary County to the west.

The county is subdivided into nine gminas (two urban, three urban-rural and four rural). These are listed in the following table, in descending order of population.
