Peru is a hamlet ( and census-designated place (CDP)) within the Town of Peru in Clinton County in the U.S. state of New York. The population was 1,514 at the 2000 census.

The community is located at the junction of Route 22 and Route 22B.

"The CDP describes the more densely populated central area within the town. The U.S. census reports data on CDP in order to provide separate demographic reporting for urbanized areas. Geography

Peru is located at coor dms|44|34|46|N|73|31|49|W|city (44.579556, -73.530539)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.1 km²).None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,514 people, 543 households, and 415 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 944.8 per square mile (365.3/km²). There were 558 housing units at an average density of 348.2/sq mi (134.7/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.82% White, 0.73% Black or African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.79% Asian, and 0.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.53% of the population.

There were 543 households out of which 37.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.1% were married couples living together, 11.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.4% were non-families. 19.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 86.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $36,442, and the median income for a family was $43,125. Males had a median income of $31,528 versus $25,859 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,142. About 9.1% of families and 14.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 23.0% of those under age 18 and 6.4% of those age 65 or over.
