Nirjuli is a town in the Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh in Northeast India. Nirjuli is located at 27.13'N 93.74'E coordinates. It is 19 km away from Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, and it takes about 40–45 minutes by road from Nirjuli to Itanagar. The National Highway, NH 52A is a highway that runs through the town and provides the primary platform for easy transportation and access within the town and to the outside world as well. The River Dikrong, the only river flowing through the town, adds to its exquisite beauty, and ultimately flows into the Brahmaputra river.

It is 10 km away from Banderdewa, the border between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and it takes about 30 minutes by road from Banderdewa to Nirjuli following the National Highway NH52-A which originates from Banderdewa itself. The railway transportation project which will soon connect Nirjuli and Guwahati is under construction.

History

Climate

A warm but pleasant climate prevails in Nirjuli all through the year. Post Monsoon, winter and spring (October to April) are marked with cool climates, especially winter months. During this season temperature ranges between 22°C to 15°C. Summer during May to June and monsoon season during July to September are also pleasant. It receives heavy showers about 2,000 to 4,000 mm between the months of May and September yearly. Monsoon temperature oscillates between 30°C to 18°C. Summer temperature can soar up to 40°C some days. Breezes from Himalayan ranges make the winter climate freezing cool.

Culture

Mopin

Mopin is celebrated by the Adi tribe in Arunachal Pradesh. A local drink called Apung (an alcoholic beverage popular in this state prepared by fermentation of rice) is generally distributed among the participants in a bamboo shoot. Like in Indian festival of Holi, revelers apply rice flour to fellow revelers' faces. Participants perform local traditional dances at this event.

Nyokum

Nyokum is a festival celebrated by the Nishi people in Arunachal Pradesh. They serve a local drink called Apung which is made by fermentation of rice. It is celebrated with great zeal and passion.

All the peoples of arunachal gives respect to the ladies, just as an examples: the grooms family does not demand anything from the brides family(Dowry), in fact they satisfies the brides family by giving them mithun the state animal of Arunachal Pradesh.

Education

The key academic resource is the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed University), under MHRD, Government of India, producing a plethora of skillful engineers and entrepreneurs every year, currently working in various parts of the globe. Kendriya Vidyalaya and Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya, under CBSE, are one among the best schools in the town. Despite that there are other Secondary and Higher Secondary schools under the State Board of Arunachal Pradesh which lays the foundation of Education in Nirjuli.

Economy

Tourism in Nirjuli is not as lucrative as other districts in Arunachal Pradesh. Horticulture too has a great influence on the economy of the town. The climate and topography of Nirjuli is conducive to horticultural products like ginger, spices, bamboo, cardamom and mushroom, aromatic and medicinal plants. The livestocks are the sources of milk, meat, manure, egg; thus contributing to the family as well as economy. In recent years, pisciculture has also become an important source of employment and income in Nirjuli.

The major industries are sawmills and plywood (both of them are illegal in the state). Rice mills, fruit preservation units and handloom handicrafts contributes their share to the economy of the state [1]

The State Bank Of India is the only bank in the town which is located inside the NERIST campus. The financial services provided by the bank include ATM cards, bank notes, coins, debit cards, as well as other services such as lending and processing money, taking deposits, maintaining their salary accounts, extending cheques, loans, credit cards, ATM cards, debit cards, etc. The town is provided with two ATM service, one of the SBI and the other of the Axis Bank. The bank also provides with i-Banking and telephone banking. With the proliferation of globalization, banks have become an integral element in the economy and the banks of Nirjuli are no exception to this. In fact, the banks are the best way to raise funds within the town. The Railway Transportation Project which will soon connect Nirjuli and Guwahati is of great importance for the economy of the town and the whole state as well as railway is the cheapest, easiest and most flexible means of transport.

Transportation

The national highway NH-52A passes through Nirjuli and connects this place to the rest of the nation. By road, one can reach Nirjuli by bus service from Guwahati via Banderdewa.Various Bus services are available for transportation,viz,Network Bus service,Blue Hill Bus service,Volvo etc.The bus fare ranges between र350 to र540 INR as of April 2011. It takes approximately 8–10 hours to reach Nirjuli from Guwahati. Nirjuli can also be reached through train. One can take the train from Rangia to reach Harmoti. From Harmoti vehicles are available for Banderdewa, and after reaching Banderdewa by auto-rickshaw or bus one can reach Nirjuli.

It should be noted that the travelers should carry a valid inner line permit to enter the gate of Banderdewa. This inner line permit can either be collected from the District Collector's office from Naharlagun. The inner line permit can also be made from their respective states from their respective district collectors. There is another permit for foreigners coming to visit. This permit is known as PAP or Protected Area Permit [2], so that a trickle number of foreigners visit the place. Furthermore, if someone "looks native," he/she can travel undetected in the protected area even if he/she does not have proper documentation.

By air, one can reach by Pawan Hans helicopter service from Guwahati. The helicopter services are available from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati (airport code: GAU) thrice a week.

Under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission JNNURM, three projects costing US$39.2 million have been sanctioned for Itanagar, the state capital.The urban transport project was approved in 2009, therefore, local transportation in Nirjuli had been established by JNNURM for urban transportation service. The Railway Transportation Project is under construction and shall be completed very soon.

Lodging

The nearest place to lodge is in Naharlagun which is around 6 – 7 km from Nirjuli and can be reached using bus service or auto rickshaw taking only 15–20 minutes. For those coming to NERIST can stay at the NERIST guest house available for visitors(but only for relatives of a NERISTian). The guest house can be booked by proper permission from the registrar of NERIST. Naharlagun has got about 2 to 3 good lodging places like hotel Nemko near to General Hospital Naharlagun, hotel Tosum nearly half a kilometer before reaching Naharlagun which serves many North Indian dishes.

Demographics

The majority of the population belongs to the Nyishi tribe. Other tribes are Adi, Apatani, Nocte, Wangcho, Monpa and many other subtribes.

People come from many different states live, work and study here. Staffs and students of NERIST are one of the best example who come from different parts of the country.
