The New Britain–Hartford Busway is a proposed bus rapid transit line running between Union Station in Hartford and downtown New Britain, in north central Connecticut. The busway was originally selected as the most cost-effective means to relieve congestion on I-84 between Hartford and Plainville,[1] but the cost has increased from $75 million[2] to $579 million.[3]

The busway will run along the "Newington Secondary," a former rail corridor between New Britain and Newington Junction.

Proposal

The busway is set to follow the route of an abandoned rail right-of-way (the "Newington Secondary") from downtown New Britain to a location near the Newington Junction station. It will then run parallel to the current Amtrak rail line. Other public bus routes may enter the busway at various points to speed their trip to downtown Hartford. 16 new or rehabilitated bridges will support the busway, and the project will include a new access road for Amtrak maintenance vehicles, as well as a 5 mile multi-use trail between New Britain and Newington.[4] Along much of its length, the busway will be constructed as a grade-separated limited-access highway.
