Career

Stephens’ early career was in English language training in Thailand, before taking up a position with Chiva-Som International Health Resort in Hua Hin, Thailand in 1999. He quickly rose in the organization to assume responsibility for Human Resources and in September 2001 left the company to take a position as Human Resources Director for a new Chiva-Som Property that was due to open in Portugal three years later but eventually never materialised.

Returning to Thailand in 2003, Michael and his older brother, Mark, created a partnership with Dr. Bill Gould whose program “Transformational Thinking” had had a profound impact on Stephens’ thinking during his role with Chiva-Som, where he employed Dr. Gould as a Training Manager.

The program influenced Stephens’ thinking on the subject of how to introduce spiritual themes into corporate programs. The subject of human spirit and the model included in Dr. Gould’s program would later be included in Stephens’ 2010 book Provolution.

With the Transformational Thinking program, Stephens and Gould worked mostly in Thailand and the Maldives, teaching thinking skills that opened minds to learning, making better choices and taking responsibility for one’s own circumstances.

In 2005 Michael and Orranut split temporarily due to differences in their life direction. Michael took a sabbatical from Transformational Thinking and went to Phuket to stay with friends, eventually choosing to leave the company altogether.

It was in Phuket that Stephens began to learn reiki and embark on a more deeply spiritual pursuit. He began to realize that his previously mental approach to life’s problems was as much a hindrance to greater growth as it was a way in which to disseminate a useful direction or purpose. During his six months in Thailand, he returned to his spiritual roots through meditation, yoga and a deeper connection with nature. He also studied as a reiki master and began offering private sessions with therapy and counselling.

In Phuket the seeds for his first manuscript “Provolution” were sowed. Originally entitled 'Mind Rafts', as a reference to a story about Buddha that he and Dr. Gould used to tell in the Transformational Thinking Program, Stephens’ began teaching a program of learning that looked at the root causes of human suffering. He introduced the idea of Uni-time (no past or future), i-go, u-go and we-go and the birth and death of emotions as a way to work through problems in awareness.

In 2006, Orranut and Michael were reunited and began living together in Pranburi, Thailand. Over the course of 2006 and 2007, while Stephens was fine-tuning Provolution and taking time out from teaching and training, Orranut became pregnant with their first child Jacob. Stephens decided to accept a job offer working with Six Senses as Director of Human Resources for the destination spa in Phuket, Thailand, allowing Orranut and Michael to be based on the island where Jacob was born.

After leaving Six Senses in October 2008, Michael and Orranut initiated a company called Provolution Learning, offering corporate HR and training programs that supported their wellness therapies and workshop programs that were being offered around Phuket. Teaching a modified version of the Transformational Thinking program, Stephens’ approach to corporate development became more focused on individual development, seeing the motivation of the individual employee as fundamental to the attainment of team purpose. This theme is one recreated in his spiritual work, particular in Provolution which is subtitled 'A Guide to Changing the World Through Personal Evolution'.

In April 2009, Stephens’s first book was accepted for publication by O-Books in the UK. Later that year, he began working with Orranut on channelling his second book, Equanimous, a conversation between Michael and his spirit guide, Master Jacob. It was released as a free eBook on his website on June 1, 2011.[3]

In January 2010, Aine, their second child was born.

In August 2010 Stephens’ first book Provolution was published by O-Books in the UK.

In September 2010 Orranut and Michael opened the 'Provolution Center' in Pakhlok, Phuket, offering them a base for their therapies, card reading, workshops, wellness classes, retreats and corporate training
