Life

Mehmed Selaheddin spent most of his life in enforced confinement in Ciragan Palace, Ortaköy in İstanbul. The Palace served as an enforced residence to his father Sultan Murad V, who had been deposed in 1876, and replaced by his brother, Sultan Abdülhamid II. The restrictions imposed on the former Sultan extended to his entire family, and were not lifted until his death in 1904. During these long years, H.I.H. Prince (Şehzade) Mehmed Selaheddin Efendi wrote a diary which give an interesting account of daily life for the imprisoned members of Sultan Murad V’s immediate family and their retinue.
