Scene Modes

The Nikon L11 has the following scene modes, which can be accessed by sliding the slider on the bottom to Scene:

  • Face Priority AF: Useful for taking a picture of someone's face. Flash will be set to On with Red Eye correction.
  • Portrait: Use for taking portraits when the person is close and clear and the background will be blurred a little bit. Flash will be set to On with Red Eye correction.
  • Landscape: Use for taking pictures of buildings, landscapes, cities, etc. Camera will focus at infinity for this. Flash will be set to Off.
  • Sports: Use this to freeze action. Also nice for pictures in dark places without flash as well, such as an underground subway. This will also increase the ISO speed used by the camera. Flash will be set to off, and macro mode is disabled for some reason
  • Night Portrait: Use this to achieve a balance between the foreground and background. Flash will be on to light the foreground, but the camera will have a long exposure to capture the background.
  • Party/Indoor: Similar to Night Portrait
  • Beach/Snow: Use to capture bright scenes such as beach and snow. Flash will be set to Auto.
  • Sunset: Use to correctly capture the hues in sunset and sunrise. Flash will be set to Off.
  • Dusk/Dawn: Similar to Sunset, but instead use this for before sunrise or after sunset. Flash will be set to Off, and camera will be focused at Infinity.
  • Night Landscape: Use to correctly capture the lights of a night landscape. Flash will be set to Off, Focus will be set to Infinity, and there will be a long exposure, so keep the camera on a tripod or steady surface.
  • Close Up: Similar to the Macro Focus setting at Auto mode.
  • Museum: Use to capture the correct brightness of indoor settings without flash photography, such as an underground subway. The ISO will not be changed greatly for this setting, most of the time it remains at 64. BSS (discussed later) will be enabled for this. Even with BSS, it is still recommended you hold the camera as steady as possible. Flash will be set to off.
  • Fireworks Show: Uses slow shutter speed to capture a fireworks display. Camera focuses at infinity, flash is set to off.
  • Copy: Use to take a picture of a black and white document. Please note though that the picture will be taken in black and white. Flash will be set to off.
  • Backlight: Use this to take a picture where the light is coming from the back, throwing a big shadow over the subject. To correct this, flash will be on to light up the subject.
  • Panorama Assist: This will help to make easier a Panorama picture. After taking one picture of a series, about one-third of the previous picture will show translucently so then you can match it up with the next picture. This is useful so then your Panorama pictures will come out better after being processed in the Panorama making software that comes on a CD with the camera. Flash will be set to off.
  • Voice Recorder: Use to record sounds.

BSS - Best Shot Selector

The Best Shot Selector is a special feature on this camera. With BSS on, you can hold down the shutter button, and the camera will take ten pictures. Then, the camera will decide which one is the clearest and will save that one only. This is useful if you are taking a picture without flash in a dark place but don't want to lose any of the light (you could use Sports mode, but that increases the ISO therefore making the picture a lot darker and grainier) in a picture; you can use BSS if you have shaky hands and want clear (or clear as possible) pictures.
