Geography and history

Argyra dates back to the ancient times. It was and is still located east of Rio and was near Volini[1] after the river Charandros and next to the homonymous spring. During Pausanias's period, the area was abandoned and ruined for years. It is named after the nymph Argyra in according to the Greek mythology, live nearby a spring and loved the shepherd's water, Selemnus, as he got older, the nymph which she left[2]. From Selemnos receives its name to the river which flows around the area.

The ancient city is located between the villages of Kastritsi and Argyra in the modern municipality of Rio, its original location has been lost.

Afterwards, nearly nothing was recorded and lost its fame until the Greek War of Independence in 1821 after nearly 375 years of Ottoman and partial Venetian rules.

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, its buildings were rebuilt and emigration occurred at a higher rate until 1981 through to 1991, it became one of the few villages in mountainous Achaia to regain is population. Dessino became connected with asphalt in the 2000s. Electricity, radio and automobiles were introduced in the mid-20th century, television in the late-20th century and computer and internet at the turn of the millennium. In 1997, the ex-community (now a village and a municipal district) joined to become the newly formed municipality of Aroania. Recently in the early-2000s, its new windmill facility that contains around 50 windmills in an area of 20 to 30 km² or 3,000 ha is about 6 km directly to the south, it first operated around the mid-2000s.

Today, it is a village with a few inhabitants, it is populated during the summer months. The population depends on olive productions.
