Cañaris

Cañaris

Cañaris was a South American Indian tribe in northern Peru, succumbed into the Inca Empire by the conquests of Huayna Capac to the north. They were assimilated into the vast empire by violent means, with thousands of Cañaris being massacred by Inca soldiers to achieve submission. The tribe existed largely around the Tumebamba area, sometimes named the "second Cuzco" because of its similarity to the capital. Tumebamba reportedly had impressive and beautiful architecture very much similar to that in Cuzco. During the Inca Civil War between the sons of Huayna Capac, the Cañaris chose to support the cause of Huáscar, despite being positioned in the northern area inherited by the illegitimate son and heir Atahualpa. Initially Huáscar's generals Atoc and Hango were successful, defeating Atahualpa's army and capturing, as well as himself, the larger cities of Cajamarca and gaining Tumipampa to their side. Aided by his father's loyal generals, however, Atahualpa managed to rout the Huáscaran army in the battles of Mullihambato and Chimborazo, forcing the interpretors back into the south. He captured and had Huáscars generals executed and massacred the Cañaris once he reached Tumebamba, burning the city to the ground and massacring its inhabitants.
