Hong Kongers in the United Kingdom are citizens or non-citizen immigrants to the UK, whose ethnic origins lie in the East Asian, former British colony of Hong Kong. In 2001, 96,445 Hong Kong born people were residing in the United Kingdom, and most recent estimates put the total Hong Kong British population (including British born people) at around 145,000. The UK serves as a popular destination for Hong Kong emigrants due to the extremely close relationship the two countries bear, with close trading and historical links (Hong Kong being a British overseas territory between 1843 - 1997), as well as the fact that the English language bears official status in both countries.

In the 2001 UK Census, 29% of Chinese British people were born in Hong Kong, which is an even larger percentage than the number of ethnic Chinese people born in England or Mainland China. Hong Kong British people were most likely to have chosen box 81 in the 2001 census, which includes all ethnically Chinese people, regardless of birth location. [ [http://www.statistics.gov.uk/census2001 2001 UK Census Ethnic Codes] ] Most Hongkongers are of Han-Chinese origin, and in this respect, they can be considered a subgroup of the larger Chinese British community. Despite this, it is important to distinguish the difference between ethnicity and nationality political wise, due to the long and complicated history of the UK and Hong Kong relationship.
