It is one of the best Universities along with the ITESM Campus Tampico in the southern part of the state of Tamaulipas,fact|date=September 2008 it serves all the metropolitan area of Tampico, Ciudad Madero and Altamira, also the northern part of the state of Veracruz and the eastern part of the state of San Luís Potosí. It has the "Campus Altamira", and the "Campus Cd. Valles" located in Ciudad Valles, San Luís Potosí.

Since 2005, it has been formally allied with the Universidad Anáhuac universities system.

Organization

It consists of academic departments rather than faculties. Both undergraduate and graduate studies are available. The IEST is also responsible for the Preparatoria IEST (Secondary school), and the campus in Ciudad Valles, which has only Preparatoria and Secundaria (Middle school), with no undergraduate or graduate services.
