Adair County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population was 21,038. Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 577 square miles (1,494 km²), of which, 576 square miles (1,491 km²) of it is land and 1 square miles (4 km²) of it (0.24%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 21,038 people, 7,471 households, and 5,565 families residing in the county. The population density was 36 people per square mile (14/km²). There were 8,348 housing units at an average density of 14 per square mile (6/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 48.52% White, 0.18% Black or African American, 42.49% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.25% from other races, and 7.45% from two or more races. 3.12% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 88.7% spoke English, 8.8% Cherokee and 2.3% Spanish as their first language.

There were 7,471 households out of which 37.30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.10% were married couples living together, 12.90% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.50% were non-families. 22.80% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.25.

In the county the population was spread out with 30.30% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 21.60% from 45 to 64, and 12.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 97.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $24,881, and the median income for a family was $29,525. Males had a median income of $23,741 versus $19,720 for females. The per capita income for the county was $11,185. About 19.40% of families and 23.20% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.20% of those under age 18 and 23.70% of those age 65 or over.
