Jana Fisher (née Hawkes) is a fictional character in an American soap opera "The Young and the Restless", portrayed by actress Emily O'Brien first on recurring status from May 11 to September 5 2006, and then on contract from October 10 2006 to February 20 2007. The actress returned on June 15 2007.

Character biography

Jana was hired as an employee at Kevin Fisher's (Greg Rikaart) coffee house, Crimson Lights, and soon took over as manager. Jana soon bonded with Kevin and they began dating. Lauren Baldwin (Tracey E. Bregman) also gave Jana a job tending her infant son, Fenmore.

Much of Jana's past was a mystery, and her reasons for moving to the United States were initially unclear. She is British, and claims to have been both an "au pair" and a skydiving instructor before arriving in Genoa City. She also lived in a trailer, and claimed to love the freedom this afforded her. She was also well-versed in art history, and was able to correctly identify the dynasty of a Chinese artifact owned by Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper) simply by glancing at it.

In February 2007, Jana disappeared, and Kevin suspected that Adrian Korbel (Eyal Podell) was responsible for that and the murder of Newman Enterprises executive Carmen Mesta (Marisa Ramirez). After Colleen Carlton (played at the time by Adrianne Leon; currently played by Tammin Sursok) was abducted and knocked out, Jana was revealed to be alive and apparently held captive in the walk-in refrigerator Colleen awoke in. After Colleen revealed everything she knew about an artifact known as the Grugeon Reliquary, Jana was taken out of the room by an unknown man.

Subsequently luring Kevin to Colleen, an armed Jana revealed that she and the man--her father--wanted the reliquary, a piece of Jewish artwork that was originally stolen by the Nazis during World War II and subsequently lost. Jana also confessed to killing Carmen Mesta, because Carmen saw the folder containing pictures of artwork that Jana stole from Victoria Newman's (Amelia Heinle) car. The folder didn't contain any useful information, as Colleen later pointed out, though Jana didn't know that at the time. In order to protect herself, Jana impulsively hit Carmen on the back of the head with a lead pipe. Jana revealed that she herself had orchestrated the kidnapping, planted a bug at the house owned by Victoria and Brad Carlton (Don Diamont), and framed Adrian for Carmen's murder. She displayed little regret for her crimes, as she locked her boyfriend Kevin and Colleen in the refrigerator and set the building on fire. Despite her love for him, Jana was trying to make it look like Kevin was trying to kill Colleen again, as he had years before, and accidentally trapped himself in the process.

Jana disappeared, and the Grugeon Reliquary (which was finally located at the end of 2006, and turned out to be the key to a priceless hidden cache of Nazi stolen artworks) was turned over to foreign officials. Kevin and Colleen were able to escape with their lives, and as Kevin recovered, he received a phone call from Jana. She expressed joy that he was alive, though Kevin vowed to kill her if they ever met again. Months later Jana communicated with Kevin over a web cam through his laptop. She expressed how much she missed what they had how she wanted to be with him again. Hoping she would come back to town to be arrested, Kevin lied saying he wanted to be with her too. She left the web cam converstation before Kevin could find a way to contact her again. Soon after, she began emailing and calling Kevin and Colleen. The two then teamed up to bring her back to Genoa City by playing on her feelings for Kevin. To make her worry, Kevin purposely ran his car into a tree and was rushed to the hospital. A terrified Jana reluctantly returned only to discover Kevin's true intentions. Although Kevin's intent was to shoot her for her betrayal, Michael, Colleen, and Daniel talked him out of it. Jana was arrested for kidnapping Kevin and Colleen, and for the murder of Carmen Mesta until she began to have a seizure.

It was revealed at the hospital that Jana had a tumor in her brain, which may have been what caused her to become psychotic. After investigating the situation, Kevin forgave Jana for her actions and fell back in love with her. However, Kevin's mother Gloria Bardwell (Judith Chapman) (and others) still wondered whether or not it was the tumor that was the cause of Jana's crazy behavior. However, Kevin did manage to convince Gloria to pay for the surgery. Afterwards, Jana continued to feel guilty about her past actions and told Kevin to move on with his life but he refused. Jana was then found competent to stand trial and was sent to prison where she became cellmates with Phyllis Newman (Michelle Stafford) after she was arrested for extortion. Jana then contacted Kevin and apologized for pushing him away. As Jana and Phyllis became better friends while behind bars, Jana decided to help Kevin and Gloria find out whether or not it was Phyllis' ex-husband Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) whom took advantage of his father John's (Jerry Douglas) lapse in memory during his prison stay and convinced him to write another will and exclude Gloria. Phyllis was then released from prison, which upset Jana as the two of them had sort of become friends as Jana comforted Phyllis through her numerous family troubles on the outside. On Thanksgiving day, she got a very big surprise when Kevin proposed to her. Although she initially said no, Kevin gave her more time to think. Two months later A.D.A. Heather Stevens reviewed her case (along with some urging from Kevin) and decided to release Jana from prison. While helping Kevin and his family ward off the blackmail threats of Jeffrey Bardwell (Ted Shackleford) towards Gloria, his family finally accepted their relationship as she and Kevin began to plan their wedding. They changed the location and theme of their wedding many times, Jana moving away from a gothic revival and leaning towards a more traditional, spiritual union.

Jana then got a job as an assistant to Victor Newman's now late wife Sabrina Costelana Newman at her art gallery. Jana was pleasantly surprised when Sabrina chose her to be her maid of honor. Sabrina and Jana had a good friendship until Sabrina's death a few months later. At Sabrina's deathbed, Jana visited and was later put in charge of planning the funeral.

Fiance Kevin went abroad with best friend, Daniel Romalotti, while Daniel's father was on tour having Daniel as a photographer; when he got back, he had a Ouiji board for Jana. She became both fascinated and terrified by it, using it to define the future of many relationships. This caused some friction between she and Kevin. She finally deemed it nonsense (which she then burned in a spiritual cleansing ritual), as Kevin had stated before and on August 18, 2008 she and Kevin were pronounced man and wife in an Ashram in Malibu.
