Saticoy, California

Saticoy is a small unincorporated community in Ventura County, California. It lies in the Santa Clara River Valley, south of the intersection of state routes 118 and 126. The ZIP Code is 93004, and the community is inside area code 805.

The present name "Saticoy" comes from the Chumash Village name- "sa'aqtik'oy"- Meaning "it is sheltered from the wind".

Saticoy means "this is the place" from the native language of the Chumash tribe located in Southern California in many years past. The natural underground springs located there made it a prime location for the tribe to hold their yearly meetings. The town itself, although never incorporated, was due to the many bridges which have crossed the Santa Clara River at that point of the river. Bridges were often washed out, due to the river rising from an abundant rainfall. However, the most notable washout was due to the flood caused from the failure of the Saint Francis Dam March 12, 1928. Saticoy is located between Ventura, Santa Paula and Oxnard, on part of the river's rich alluvial fan—'one of three areas in the world that has sixty feet of rich topsoil. Agriculture of the area includes; avocados, lemons, oranges, strawberries and many other row crops.
