Timothy Van Laar

Timothy Van Laar (born in Ann Arbor, Michigan) is an American artist and writer who lives and works in Chicago and Champaign, Illinois. He produces paintings, drawings and installation works that have been exhibited throughout North America and Europe, including Germany, Greece, England and Scotland, Ireland, The Netherlands, and Slovenia. He has received fellowships and grants and other support from Fulbright, Yaddo, Pew Charitable Trusts, Henry Luce Foundation, Howard Foundation, Illinois Art Council, Michigan Council for the Arts and the Karl Hofer Gesellschaft. His work is in numerous collections, including The Detroit Institute of Arts, The Illinois State Museum, Herman Miller, and J.P. Morgan.

He is co-author of two books with Leonard Diepeveen: "Active Sights: Art as Social Interaction" and "Art with a Difference: Looking at Difficult and Unfamiliar Art". He has also authored numerous reviews and catalog essays. Currently he is a Professor of Art in the School of Art and Design, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
