Khurda (Khordha) is a town and a notified area committee in Khurda district in the Indian state of Orissa. Bhubaneswar, capital of Orissa, belongs to Khurda district and is only 30 km from Khurda town.

History

Khurda district has a unique place in history being the last kingdom to be conquered by the British in 1803. It is famous for Barunei temple atop the Barunei Hill.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Khurdha had a population of 39,034,the population of Khurda, as estimated in late 2006( [http://population-of.com/en/India/21/Khurda/] ), is 42,526. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Khurdha has an average literacy rate of 78%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84%, and female literacy is 72%. In Khurdha, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Politics

Current MLA from Khurda Assembly Constituency is Jyotirindra Nath Mitra of BJD, who won the seat in State elections in 2004 and also in 2000 as an independent candidate. Previous MLAs from this seat were Prasanna Kumar Patasani who won it for JD in 1995 and 1990 and also as a candidate of INC(I) in 1980, Janaki Ballabh Pattanaik of INC in 1985, and Sudarshan Mohanty of JNP in 1977.
