Relationship with and marriage to Giuliani

Judith Nathan met Mayor Giuliani in May 1999 at Club Macanudo, an Upper East Side cigar bar;Eric Konigsberg, [http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/05/us/politics/05judith.html "Drawing Fire, Judith Giuliani Gives Her Side"] , "The New York Times", August 5, 2007. The mayor was still married to and living with his second wife, Donna Hanover, although they had been publicly distant since 1996, [Margaret Carlson, [http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,27945,00.html "In Rudy's Playground"] , "Time", July 11, 1999. For most of a year the relationship was kept secret, and in early 2000 Giuliani arranged for New York Police Department security and chauffering for her.cite news | author=Michael Saul, Heidi Evans, and David Saltonstall | title=Mayor's Gal Got Security Earlier than We Knew | url=http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2007/12/07/2007-12-07_judith_nathan_got_security_earlier.html | publisher=New York Daily News | date=December 7, 2007 | accessdate=2007-12-07] By March 2000 Giuliani and Nathan were appearing together at public events;cite news | url=http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9E03E4D61E39F937A35756C0A9669C8B63 | title= Mayor Acknowledges 'Very Good Friend' | author=Elisabeth Bumiller | publisher=The New York Times | date=2000-05-04 | accessdate=2007-12-07] in May 2000 Giuliani publicly acknowledged her as his "very good friend" and, amidst a flurry of press scrutiny about Nathan, announced he was separating from Hanover.cite news | url=http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9E04E7D8163BF932A25756C0A9669C8B63 | title=Giuliani and His Wife of 16 Years Are Separating | author=Elisabeth Bumiller | publisher=The New York Times | date=2000-05-11 | accessdate=2007-12-08] Later in 2000, Giuliani credited Nathan's nursing background in helping him through his treatment for prostate cancer. In March 2001, desiring less travel and reduced public visibility, Nathan left Bristol-Myers and became a fund raiser and later the managing director of Changing Our World, a national fundraising and philanthropic services company headquartered in New York that helps not-for-profit groups raise money for causes such as juvenile blindness and HIV/AIDS in Africa.

The couple have a $5 million apartment off Madison Avenue in the Upper East Side in Manhattan and a $4 million summer home in The Hamptons and like to play golf.

From shortly before their marriage until his presidential campaign began, Rudy Giuliani paid her an average of $125,000 per year for her purported professional value as a speechwriter.David Saltonstall, [http://www.kansascity.com/news/politics/story/113748.html "Earning $125,000 a year"] , "New York Daily News", May 18, 2007. Fundraising

After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Giuliani credited Nathan with coordinating the efforts of the Family Assistance Center at Pier 94, a claim disputed by the first director of New York City's Office of Emergency Management, Jerry Hauer, but supported by others who say she played a valuable role there that lasted for four months. She became a founding member of the Board of Trustees of the Twin Towers Fund, appointed by Giuliani, which raised and distributed $216 million to over 600 families and individuals. Contributions to the Fund also created the TTF Scholarship Fund and America’s Camp for victim’s children.

Since the occasion of her third marriage, Judith Giuliani has worked to raise funds for St. Vincent's Hospital and Cabrini High School for Girls in New York and for Hurricane Katrina relief in New Orleans. In March 2005 she received the Community Award from the New York Junior League; [ [http://www.gcnews.com/news/2005/0204/Sports/027.html "GC Resident To Be Honored By Junior League"] , February 4, 2005. As of 2007 she serves as Executive Director of the Campaign for Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Center in New York, seeking to construct the first Level I trauma center below 14th Street in Manhattan.

Role in Giuliani presidential campaign

As Rudy Giuliani's presidential campaign began in earnest in 2007, Judith Giuliani served as an advisor and fundraiser, but also came in for a new round of intense media attention. Her first marriage to Jeffrey Ross was revealed in the press for the first time; her educational background was clarified; she appeared in a Barbara Walters interview on "20/20"; her estranged relations with Rudy Giuliani's children were examined; [ [http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17479746/ "Giuliani seeks privacy on family issues"] , MSNBC, March 6, 2007. During the March 2007 Walters interview, the Giulianis stated that she would sit in on Cabinet meetings were he elected, a plan that attracted criticism and that they later backed away from. [cite news | url=http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,302508,00.html | title=Judith Giuliani Sets Record Straight on Attending Cabinet Meetings | publisher=Fox News | date=2007-10-16 | accessdate=2007-10-17] In September 2007 he interrupted a speech before the National Rifle Association to take a cell phone call from her;cite news | url=http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,297649,00.html | title=Rudy Giuliani Interrupts Speech to Take Wife's Phone Call | publisher=Associated Press | date=2007-09-21 | accessdate=2007-10-06] part of a pattern of about forty such incidents where he interrupted meetings to take her calls, cite news | url=http://www.opinionjournal.com/diary/?id=110010674 | title=Rude Giuliani | author=John Fund | publisher=The Wall Street Journal | date=2007-10-01 | accessdate=2007-10-06] it led to more bad publicity, with political reporter John Fund saying Rudy Giuliani staffers were "appalled" by his behavior and "terrified" of her.
