Dance in Canada

A wide variety of dance occurs in Canada. Ballet companies include the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the National Ballet of Canada based in Toronto, Ballet Jörgen Canada based in Toronto, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens based in Montreal, the Alberta Ballet based in Calgary, Ballet BC beased in Vancouver, Ballet Kelowna, Ballet du Printemps based in Vancouver, Ballet Victoria, Canadian Pacific Ballet based in Victoria, and the Goh Ballet in Vancouver. There are many modern dance companies including Toronto Dance Theatre, O Vertigo in Montreal, Compagnie Marie Chouinard in Montreal, Par B.l.eux founded by Benoît Lachambre in Montreal, Danny Grossman Dance Company in Toronto, Mocean Dance in Halifax and Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers.

The largest company in the country is The National Ballet of Canada. The Royal Winnipeg is the oldest and holds the distinction of being the first and only Ballet Company in North America to hold the "Royal" title. RWB is also the oldest still-running ballet company in the continent. Ballet Jorgen Canada, while itself only the fifth-largest company in the country, has the largest audience of any ballet company in Canada and has established itself as a touring company.

Canada is home to hundreds of amateur Ukrainian dance groups as well as professional and semi-professional companies such as the Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Company in Edmonton.

Many immigrant communities continue their own dance traditions on a professional or amateur basis including Esmerelda Enrique Spanish Dance Company, le ballet compagnie en France and Ballet Creole, both very large and successful companies with affiliated schools running in Toronto.

Native Canadian dancing takes place at pow wows.
