Campeonato do Nordeste

Campeonato do Nordeste (Northeastern Championship in English), also known as Copa do Nordeste or Copa Nordeste (Northeastern Cup), is a Brazilian football competition contested between Northeastern region teams (exclude teams from Maranhão and Piauí, which geographic belong to the North East region but played at Copa Norte).

From 1997 to 1999, the Campeonato do Nordeste champions granted qualification to Copa Conmebol.

From 2000 to 2002, the Campeonato do Nordeste champions granted qualification to the Copa dos Campeões.

The competition returned in 2010, after being defunct since 2003.[1]

Contents

Competition format

In 2010, all 16 clubs play against each other once. The four best played teams qualify to the playoff stage, which is played in one leg, starting with the semifinals.[1]

The first and second-placed clubs play all their playoff games at home.[1]
