Hickman is a 1978 graduate of
Coe College inCedar Rapids, Iowa .In 1977, Hickman began his
broadcasting career as a news anchor at KLWW-AM inCedar Rapids, Iowa . Then, he moved to WFMB-AM inSpringfield, Illinois . Later, Hickman served as an anchor and sports director of Springfield television station, WICS. Hickman worked at NBC affiliateWDIV in Detroit in the early-mid 1980s.CNN and TBS
In 1980, he joined
CNN and along withNick Charles hosted the CNN show, "Sports Tonight". Hickman left CNN and spent three years as a sports anchor at WDIV-TV inDetroit, Michigan . He returned to theTurner Broadcasting System where he served as an anchor for CNN/"Sports Illustrated" as well as providing anchoring TBS's NBA studio show, coverage of theGoodwill Games , and theWinter Olympics .During this tenure, Hickman caused a minor
controversy when he cast his first place vote for the 2000NBA Most Valuable Player Award forAllen Iverson . Hickman was the sole voter who did not cast his first place vote that year forShaquille O'Neal , thus preventing O'Neal from claiming the honor of being the firstunanimous MVP selection in the history of the award.YES Network
Hickman then joined the
YES Network when it launched in 2002, as its original anchor he hosted theNew York Yankees Pre-Game Show and theNew York Yankees Post-Game Show forNew York Yankees telecasts. As well as the pregame and postgame shows forNew Jersey Nets cablecasts. He also hosted the weeklyYankees Magazine . Most of Hickman's work at YES took place at the network's studio inStamford, Connecticut , miles away fromYankee Stadium and theContinental Airlines Arena .ESPN
In late 2004, after the completion of three baseball seasons and two NBA seasons with the network, Hickman left to join ESPN.
Honors
Hickman has been nominated for four CableACE awards, winning in 1993 and 1994.
